APIC oversees a database of thousands of insurance agents who have volunteered to be part of NAIFA's nationally-recognized legislative action team. When federal legislation hits a crucial point in the legislative process on Capitol Hill, NAIFA activates its contact system. Agents and advisors all around the country communicate NAIFA's message on Capitol Hill about issues that affect their livelihoods. This contact takes place in the form of letters, faxes, phone calls and face-to-face meetings in the congressional districts and in Washington, D.C.
Case in Point: During the debate of President Clinton's health care reform proposal, NALU (as we were called at that time) sponsored a fly-in where over 300 agents came to Washington for the express purpose of meeting with their legislators to discuss the ill-affects that mandatory health alliances would have on the health care delivery process. In fact, the demise of the concept of mandatory health alliances in Clinton's health care plan has been attributed by several majority leaders to the almost 1,000 meetings that took place between NALU local association members and members of Congress on that subject alone.
In short, you DO have the means to protect your livelihood from unwarranted changes. All it takes is your involvement and participation. As stated clearly in the quote by Senator Thad Cochran (Click on the APIC logo to view), if you don't help shape legislation by providing your input and expertise to your elected officials, you can be sure that someone else will. Your involvement in APIC at NAIFA assures that elected officials will hear your views on critical issues. By joining APIC, you will be on the legislative front line.

Former NAIFA President

"An agent can become politically involved several ways. One, work for the Congressman - go door to door, get involved in fundraising. It isn't always necessary to be contacting the Congressman himself or herself...If you work out a good relationship with the staff people then you will be heard because they'll know 1) you're a worker, 2) you have the community interest at heart and 3) you will follow through and you're dependable. It's a great experience, it's worthwhile and it pays off."
APIC: Creating a Network of Active Constituents
Active, informed constituents communicating directly with their members of Congress that's what APIC (Advisors Political Involvement Committee) is all about. Your involvement can range from responding to NAIFA Action Alerts on legislation affecting your business, signing up as a legislative contact for NAIFA (if you personally know a member of Congress) or serving as a Federal Senate or House Coordinator and hold regular meetings in the district with your legislator. The level of involvement is up to you!
